Retired in Atlanta and Love Dogs

Retirement is supposed to give you your time back. For a lot of people, it does. But after the first few months, something else shows up too: a missing sense of purpose. The schedule that used to shape your day is gone. The people you saw every day at work are gone too. And for many retirees, the hardest part isn’t money. It’s the quiet.

If you love dogs, there’s a way to fill that quiet with something good. And it might even pay you.

Why retirees make great Canine Enrichment Specialists/Dog Walkers

Dogs don’t care about your resume. They care about patience, consistency, and someone who shows up when they say they will. Those are exactly the qualities a lot of retirees have in abundance. You’ve spent decades being reliable. You know how to read a room, or in this case, read a dog. You have the patience that some generations juggling three side jobs usually doesn’t.

At Praline’s Backyard, we’re not looking for someone to rush in, throw a leash on a dog, and rush back out. We’re looking for people who want to build a real relationship with the dogs they care for. That’s what a Canine Enrichment Specialist does. It’s private walks built around what a specific dog actually needs that day: sniffing time, mental games, calm one on one attention, sometimes just quiet company. It’s not a pack walk. It’s not herding five dogs down a sidewalk. It’s one dog, one person, real attention.

What the role actually looks like

As a Canine Enrichment Specialist/Dog Walker, you’ll be matched with a small number of dogs in your part of Atlanta. You’ll get to know them. Not just their names, but their habits, their fears, what makes them relax, what makes them nervous. Visits include private walks with enrichment built in, dog taxi rides to vet or grooming appointments, and for some team members, overnight pet sitting for clients who travel.

You set your own availability. If you want a few hours a few days a week, that works. If you want more, we can talk about that too. Either way, you’re never juggling twelve gig app notifications trying to grab whatever job pops up first. You’re part of a small, trained team that knows exactly who they’re caring for and why.

Training, not just a background check

A lot of dog walking apps will let almost anyone sign up after a background check and call it done. We do it differently. Every Canine Enrichment Specialist goes through real training on dog behavior, body language, and enrichment techniques, so you’re not just walking a dog, you’re genuinely supporting its wellbeing. You’ll learn things most dog owners never think about, like why a tired dog isn’t always a calm dog, and how the right kind of mental engagement can turn an anxious dog into a settled one.

This isn’t busy work. It’s a skill. And by the time you finish training, you’ll have it.

A second act that actually fits your life

Maybe you’re not looking to replace a full income. Maybe you just want something that gets you outside, keeps you moving, and puts a little extra in your pocket each month without swallowing your whole calendar. That’s exactly what this is built for.

You get the structure of a real job: a team, training, clear expectations. You get the flexibility of retirement: control over your hours, no boss looking over your shoulder, no forced schedule. And you get the part that tends to matter most once the initial retirement glow wears off: a reason to get up, get outside, and be needed by someone, even if that someone happens to have four legs.

Who we’re looking for

We’re not looking for the person who wants the fastest, easiest job on an app. We’re looking for people who genuinely like dogs and want to understand them, not just manage them. If you’re patient, reliable, and you’d rather build a relationship with three dogs than rush through fifteen, this is probably a good fit.

We currently bring on new team members in small numbers so every Specialist can truly get to know the dogs they’re caring for. If that sounds like the kind of work culture you want to be part of, we’d love to hear from you.
