You looked away for a second—and your dog was gone. Maybe a door didn’t latch. Maybe they bolted after a squirrel. Either way, your heart is racing and you don’t know what to do next.
At Praline’s Backyard Dog Services, we understand how terrifying this moment can be. As dog parents ourselves, we’ve helped dozens of Atlanta pet owners take fast, effective action to reunite with their dogs. You don’t have to navigate this alone.
Here’s what to do right now—and how to stack the odds in your favor.
Step 1: Act Immediately and Locally
Start by searching your immediate area—call their name, squeak their favorite toy, and leave scent items like their bed or your worn shirt near the point of escape. Dogs rely on scent more than sight to find their way back.
Tell neighbors, dog walkers, and mail carriers. Post in local community groups like Nextdoor, Ring Neighbors, and Facebook pages like Lost & Found Pets – Atlanta GA.
Step 2: Contact Local Shelters and Vets
Report your lost pet to:
-
Fulton County Animal Services: (404) 613-0358
-
DeKalb County Animal Services: (404) 294-2996
-
Atlanta Humane Society: (404) 875-5331
Visit in person if you can. Shelters are busy, and it’s easier to recognize your dog in person than from a description alone.
Step 3: Update Their Microchip Information
If your dog is microchipped, log into the registration portal and mark them as lost. Make sure your phone number is current.
Step 4: Use Flyers and Digital Tools
Yes—old-school flyers still work. Post them at major intersections, parks, and vet offices. Include a clear photo, your phone number, and “DO NOT CHASE” if your dog is skittish.

Step 5: Set Up Preventive Tools for the Future
Once your dog is home (and we believe they will be), consider adding a GPS dog collar like the Fi Collar—which we provide free to our clients. This lets you track your dog in real time from your phone, giving you peace of mind during walks and emergencies.
At Praline’s Backyard, we don’t just walk dogs. We provide structure, enrichment, and security—because a happy dog is a safe dog.
