Before You Go: 6 Dog Safety Tips
You are the highlight of your dog’s day. These six tips help you keep it fun.
1. Test the costume at home first. Let your dog wear it for a few minutes in the living room. Watch for stiff walking, scratching, or freezing in place. The costume should not cover the eyes, ears, or nose. Your dog should be able to see, breathe, bark, and move freely. If they hate it, a bandana can be just as cute.
2. Check the rules before you leave. Many events ask for leashes, vaccine records, or waivers. Some limit how many dogs each person can bring. A quick read of the event page saves you stress at the gate.
3. Pack for the day. Bring water, a collapsible bowl, waste bags, and a few treats your dog already loves. Atlanta afternoons can still run warm in late October, so offer water often and find shade for breaks.
4. Keep ID on and your leash short. Costumes, crowds, and loud noises can make even a calm dog bolt. Make sure your dog wears a collar with a current tag, and that the microchip information is up to date. Use a short leash in crowds.
5. Watch your dog’s body language. A happy dog is loose and wiggly. A stressed dog may pant, yawn, lick their lips, tuck their tail, or pull away. If you see these signs, leave the crowd and give your dog a quiet space. Leaving early is not a failure. It is good care.
6. Keep candy out of reach. Chocolate and anything with xylitol, a sugar substitute found in many candies and gum, can be dangerous to dogs. Keep candy bowls and trick-or-treat bags up high. If your dog eats something that is not safe, call your vet or an animal poison control hotline right away.
We are not veterinarians, so check with your vet if your dog has health concerns or anxiety in crowds.
Not Every Dog Loves a Crowd
Some dogs love a parade. Others would rather stay home. Both are fine. A dog who gets nervous in crowds may be happier with a quiet walk around Kirkwood or Morningside and a special treat at home.
You know your dog best. If a big event feels like too much, a calm, private outing can be the better gift.
How We Help Atlanta Dog Parents
At Praline’s Backyard, we know how busy life gets. Between work, travel, and holidays, it is hard to give your dog everything you want to give them.
That is why every member’s dog gets private walks with tailored enrichment from a team of Canine Enrichment Specialists who know your dog’s likes and limits. Here is the simple plan:
- Meet us. We start with a Dog Lifestyle Assessment so we know your dog’s personality and comfort level.
- Choose the membership that fits. We help you pick the plan that matches your dog and your schedule.
- Enjoy the peace of mind. You get photos, video, and a report after every visit.
Our Fall Fresh Start gives your dog a free first week of walks when you join by October 31st.
What Success Looks Like
Picture a happy, tired dog in a cozy costume, or a dog snoozing at home with a chew after a quiet walk. You smile at the photos. The guilt gets quieter.
A balanced life is a happy life, for you and for your dog.
